Insurance & Out-of-Network Benefits

Understanding Insurance, Out-of-Network Benefits, and Paying for Therapy

Choosing therapy is an investment in your child's emotional well-being—and we understand that cost is an important part of that decision.

At The Center for Family Empowerment, we are primarily an out-of-network practice, which means we do not participate directly with most insurance companies. However, many of our clients are able to use their out-of-network benefits to receive partial reimbursement for therapy.

Our team is committed to making this process as straightforward as possible and helping you understand your options before beginning services.

What Does "Out of Network" Mean?

Being an out-of-network provider simply means we do not bill most insurance companies directly or participate in most insurance networks.

Instead, clients pay for services at the time of their appointment. If your insurance plan includes out-of-network mental health benefits, you may be eligible to receive reimbursement for a portion of your therapy costs.

Many families are surprised to learn they have out-of-network coverage available through their insurance plan.

Why Do Some Families Choose an Out-of-Network Practice?

Every family's needs are different. Some families choose an out-of-network practice because they're looking for specialized expertise in a particular area, such as:

• Anxiety • OCD & Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) • Trauma & EMDR • ADHD & Executive Functioning • Play Therapy
• Family Therapy • Parent Coaching • Reunification Therapy • Co-Parenting Counseling

Others appreciate the flexibility that comes with an out-of-network model, including treatment plans that are guided by clinical needs rather than insurance requirements.

For many families, the ability to choose a therapist whose training and experience best fit their child's needs is an important part of the decision-making process.

Can I Use My Insurance?

Possibly. Many PPO and POS insurance plans include out-of-network mental health benefits that may reimburse a portion of therapy costs after you submit a claim.

Every insurance plan is different, so we encourage families to contact their insurance provider to better understand their coverage. We are also happy to contact on your behalf.

You may wish to ask:

  • Do I have out-of-network mental health benefits?

  • Is there a deductible I need to meet?

  • What percentage of each session is reimbursed after my deductible?

  • Is there a limit on the number of therapy sessions covered?

  • Do I need preauthorization for outpatient therapy?

  • How do I submit claims for reimbursement?

We'll Help Make the Process Easier

Following your sessions, we'll provide a superbill that includes the information many insurance companies require for out-of-network reimbursement. Families can submit this documentation directly to their insurance company according to their plan's requirements.

If you have questions about the process, we're happy to explain how superbills work and what information is typically included.

While we cannot guarantee reimbursement or determine insurance benefits, we're committed to helping you understand the process as clearly as possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why don't you accept insurance?

Our practice has chosen to remain out of network so our clinicians can focus on individualized treatment and matching families with specialized care. Every family's needs are different, and we believe treatment decisions should be guided by clinical recommendations and collaborative care.

How do I know if I have out-of-network benefits?

The best way to find out is by contacting your insurance company directly. They can explain your deductible, reimbursement percentage, and any requirements for submitting claims. If you’d like, we’d be happy to contact your insurance company on your behalf.

Will you submit claims to my insurance company?

We provide a superbill that many families use to submit claims for reimbursement. Because every insurance plan is different, families are responsible for submitting claims according to their insurance company's process.

What is a superbill?

A superbill is an itemized receipt containing the information that many insurance companies require to process out-of-network reimbursement claims.

What if I don't have out-of-network benefits?

Many families choose to pay privately for therapy even without insurance reimbursement. We also encourage families to learn more about our Low Fee Therapy Program if cost is a concern.
