Queer Empowered
A Supportive Therapy Group for LGBTQ+ Teens Building Confidence, Connection, and Self-Understanding in Jenkintown, PA and Wellesley, MA
Helping LGBTQ+ Teens Feel Seen, Supported, and Empowered
Being a teenager can already come with questions about identity, friendships, relationships, confidence, and belonging. For LGBTQ+ teens, these experiences can sometimes feel even more complicated.
Queer Empowered is a supportive, affirming therapy group where LGBTQ+ teens can connect with peers who understand, explore their identities, build confidence, and develop practical skills for navigating relationships, emotions, and everyday challenges.
This is a space where teens do not have to explain or defend who they are. They can come as they are, connect with others, and build a stronger sense of self.
Who Is Queer Empowered For?
This group may be a good fit for LGBTQ+ teens who are navigating:
• Questions about identity, self-expression, or belonging • Low self-esteem or difficulty feeling confident • Anxiety about being judged, misunderstood, or rejected • Friendship or relationship challenges • Family communication or conflict • People-pleasing or difficulty setting boundaries • Negative self-talk or feeling like they are “different” • Social anxiety or difficulty finding a sense of community • Stress related to coming out or deciding who to come out to • Navigating gender identity or sexual orientation • Pressure to fit in or hide parts of themselves • Bullying, exclusion, or difficult peer experiences • Intense emotions, stress, or difficulty coping • Social media and comparison • Developing independence and learning to advocate for themselves
You May Notice Your Teen:
• Worry a lot about what other people think • Feel like they don't quite fit in • Struggle to find friends or relationships where they feel completely comfortable • Keep parts of themselves hidden in certain settings • Have difficulty communicating what they need • Feel anxious about coming out or being misunderstood • Be highly sensitive to rejection or criticism • Compare themselves to other LGBTQ+ teens or peers • Struggle with confidence or negative self-talk • Experience conflict with family members around identity or self-expression • Feel lonely even when they are surrounded by other people
Does this sound familiar?
Maybe your teen seems confident at home but is constantly worrying about how they are perceived at school. Maybe they have found some people who understand them but still feel like they don't fully belong anywhere. Maybe they are trying to figure out who they are while also navigating friendships, dating, family expectations, and the pressure to fit in. Or maybe they simply want a place where they can talk openly with other LGBTQ+ teens who get it. They don't have to navigate it alone.
What Teens Will Work On
Through discussion, activities, and skill-building, teens may work on:
• Self-confidence and self-acceptance • Identity exploration and positive identity development • Communication and self-advocacy • Healthy friendships and relationships • Boundaries and assertiveness • Managing anxiety and difficult emotions
• Coping with rejection, conflict, and stress • Navigating coming out and disclosure • Responding to judgment or misunderstanding • Reducing negative self-talk • Building resilience and self-compassion • Finding supportive relationships and community
• Navigating social media and comparison • Developing a stronger sense of belonging
Why Group Therapy?
There is something powerful about realizing “I'm not the only one.”
Group therapy gives teens the opportunity to connect with peers who may understand experiences that can be difficult to explain to others. They can practice communication and relationship skills in real time while learning from one another.
Rather than simply talking about confidence, boundaries, or relationships, teens have an opportunity to practice these skills in a supportive environment.
A Space Where Teens Can Be Themselves
Queer Empowered is designed to be a space where teens can show up without having to perform, explain, or hide.
Our approach is LGBTQ+ affirming, strengths-based, and developmentally appropriate. We respect each teen's individual identity, language, experiences, and pace. Teens do not need to have everything figured out before joining the group. Identity can be explored, questioned, and understood over time.
The goal isn't to tell teens who they are. It's to help them feel more comfortable discovering and becoming themselves.
What Parents Can Expect
Parents can expect a supportive therapeutic environment focused on their teen's emotional well-being, confidence, relationships, and development.
Group therapy provides teens with opportunities to build skills and connection while maintaining appropriate privacy within the group setting. Parents will receive information about their teen's participation and overall progress while respecting the boundaries and confidentiality that help make group therapy effective.
When appropriate, clinicians may also provide parents with guidance on how to create a more supportive environment at home and better understand their teen's experiences.
Is Queer Empowered Right for My Teen?
Queer Empowered may be a good fit if your teen would benefit from:
Connecting with other LGBTQ+ teens
A safe and affirming place to talk openly
Building confidence and self-acceptance
Strengthening communication and relationship skills
Learning healthier ways to manage stress and emotions
Developing self-advocacy and boundaries
Feeling less alone in their experiences
Teens do not need to be experiencing a significant mental health concern to benefit from the group. Sometimes, having a place to connect with peers and feel understood is exactly what a teen needs.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who can participate?
Queer Empowered is designed for LGBTQ+ teens. Teens may be questioning, exploring, or confident in their identity. They do not need to use a particular label or have everything figured out.
Does my teen need individual therapy to participate?
Not necessarily. Group therapy can be a helpful standalone support or can complement individual therapy when appropriate.
What if my teen is nervous about joining?
That's completely normal. Many teens feel nervous about joining a new group, especially when they don't know anyone. Our clinicians work to make the transition comfortable and help teens participate at their own pace.
Will parents know what my teen shares in group?
Confidentiality is an important part of creating a safe therapeutic environment. Parents will receive appropriate information about their teen's participation and safety, while teens are given appropriate privacy to develop trust and connection within the group.
What if my teen is questioning their identity?
That's okay. Teens do not need to have a defined identity or label to participate. The group can be a place to explore questions about identity in a supportive, nonjudgmental environment.
Is Teens Empowered covered by insurance?
The Center for Family Empowerment is an out-of-network practice. Depending on your insurance plan, you may have out-of-network benefits that provide reimbursement for therapy services.
